It runs in bearings which can swivel so as to give a fullreven bearing to the shaft necks, there-by obviating the packing of the outeredges of the main pedestals to allowfor the deflection of the shaft underits heavy load of flywheel. Thevalve gear eccentrics are driven bya shaft and bevel wheels from themain shaft. This permits eccentricsof reasonablv moderate diameter to DRIVING OF COTTON MILLS 299. 3oo CASSIERS MAGAZINE be employed, and enables the eccen-tric rods to be kept as short as theyare required to be. The governorhas a safety appliance which cuts offsteam should the speed become ex-cessive, and it cannot be rendered in-operative except for the short timewhen stopping the engine, for it au-tomatically resets itself to safety. Tests of two engines of this typeof 1,300 and 1,600 horse-power re-spectively showed that the frictionloss was and per cent, re-spectively. The steam consumptionis about 14 pounds per indicatedhorse-power hour with a boiler pres-sure of 120 pounds and 13 poundswith a pressure of 160 pounds. Aprolonged test with superheatedsteam upon an engine of 1,400 horse-power showed only 12 pounds ofsteam per indicated horse-powerhour. Tubular reheaters have beenrecommended to give even bettereconomy, but they introduce this dan-ger that if a tube leaks, as it may doinwardly, it might supply steam enough, beyond the control of thegovernor, to cause a ru
