Mr. Blaine entered public life almost by a law of great-grandfather, Colonel Ephraim Blaine, of Carlisle,Pennsylvania, held the position of commissary-general of theAmerican army during the war of the Revolution from theyear 1778 to the end of the struggle in 1783. Washington de-clared he saved the army from starvation. Mr. Blaines grandfather, for whom he is named, intendedat first to choose a professional and political career, but asomewhat protracted stay in Europe, after he had finished hisstudies, directed him from the line of his first ambition.
