The following is an extract from a letter receivedfrom Hugh B. Spens, commanding his bat-talion :— He was one of my very best officers and had done magnificentlyever since he came to us. He began by escaping from theGermans when taken prisoner owing to his coolness andcourage. He was wonderfully gallant when he won theMilitary Cross, and he was always the same. He has donesplendidly in all the recent fighting, which has been one longrecord of success for the battalion. He was, too, such a lovablecharacter and every one was so fond of him. His menworshipped him, and he could not do enough for them. GlasgowStaff. Killed in action, 23rd October, 1918. ^Q Glasgow STAFF
