Capital, $10,000,000.—The works of thiscompany are situated within the city limits of Eliza-beth, near the western terminus of the Central Rail-road bridge across Newark Bay. In order to combinein one grand establishment the various branches oftheir extensive manufacturing business, which hadbeen formerly carried on at various widely-separatedpoints, the Singer Manufacturing Company in 1870purchased forty acres of land on the south side of theCentral Railroad track, bordering on Newark Bay, anderected the mammoth structure known as the Singer. Charles, son of Lewis Tucker, of Connecticut, was one of theearliest seltlei-s of Elizaljcthtown, and one of the original As-sociates. His name is appended to an Oath of A Leaganceand Fidelity, taken by the Inhabitants of Elizabeth Town andthe Jurisdiction thereof, beginning the 19th February, also appears on many of the ancient records in differentcapacities. He was a birge laml-owner and an influential andactive man among the early pioneers. His son, Wesscls Tucker,was born Jan. 30,17-41, and a carpenter by trade. He diedJan. 30, 1805. Luke, son of \yessels, was also a carpenter, andwas born Aug. 13, 1785, and died March 20, 1S65. He wasstrongly opposed to the in.«titution of slavery, and was one of theearly members of the Republican party. For many years hewas the agent of William Gibbons, who ran a stage-line betweenNew York and Philadelphia, and had charge of a
