The Post Office at Ophir dates from 1886 and is one of the most photographed buildings in Central Otago. It was built in 1886 for £323 6s and 9d (nearly $650). In 1976 it was taken over by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust as it was in danger of closing. It is still open today as an agency to serve both the local community and Ophir's many visitors.
