JAlso, when running overstraight track the operator can adjust for-ward wheel so that the flange will run freefrom the rail, and thus avoid any unneces-sary friction. ■ .The rear wheel has no railflange—it being in line with the forwardw^heel—the frame very rigid and the treadsufficiently wide to make derailment im-possible. The auxiliary wheel is 11 inchesdiameter, has a rail flange, and is otherwise 340 constructed throughout same as largerwheels. All three wheels are covered onthe tread with a continuous rubber bandA inch thick by 3 inches wide. Theserubber tires adhere closely to the rail, thus. doing away with all danger of slipping andcar jumping the track when the rails arewet or frosty. They also cause the car torun noiselessly, thus enabling the operatorto detect approaching trains from the rearas well as the front. They also take thejar from the machine, which adds a largepercentage to the life of the same. The new railway velocipede can bepropelled at the rate of 20 miles or moreper hour on level track.
