Hun soldier and herald
A Hun soldier in armoured tunic and fur cape, holding a straight sword with another curved scimitar on his belt. A Hun herald (10) in armoured tunic and plumed helmet, holding a sceptre and carrying a curved sword at his belt. "The Huns or the Hiong-nu, a very ancient nation from the north-east of Asia, penetrated Europe at the beginning of the 5th century." "One sees in this engraving a man holding up a naked sword drenched with blood. He is accompanied by a herald who traveled the lands of the Huns to convene an assembly of the people. It is obvious to see that these Huns have already had contact with the Romans." Handcolored copperplate engraving from Robert von Spalart's "Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages" (1796).
