'William Austin, Her Majesty's Protege', c1820. Portrait of William Austin (1802-1857), adopted son of Queen Caroline (1768-1821, also known as Caroline of Brunswick, consort of King George IV). It was alleged by some that Austin was Caroline's illegitimate son. From an album containing portraits and satirical caricatures related to Queen Caroline's trial in 1820.
