The Marquis de Lafayette with George Washington, c1775-1781 (c1880). Lafayette served under Washington in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. In the middle of the conflict he returned to France for a time in order to persuade the French to increase their support for the Americans in their bid for independence.
