Natural philosophy lecture. 18th-century diagram, illustrating the concept of velocity (distance covered per unit time). This diagram is part of a series of lectures (this is lecture 14) by the Scottish mathematician John Keill (1671-1721). These lectures, dating from 1700, took place at the University of Oxford, where Keill held posts as lecturer and professor. Here, the lectures have been published as part of the work 'An introduction to natural philosophy' (1720). This work included Keill's demonstrations of Huygens's theorems, concerning centrifugal force and circular motion.
