Extensive tunnelling at the nearby Yi Tang coal mine has caused severe subsidence and many houses have collapsed. The mining company and local officials have offered to move the villagers to new appartment blocks in town if they can find the RMB (US$10,000) necessary to buy the apartments but no-one has the money.
