The Warsaw Barbican (barbakan Warszawski) is one of the few remaining relics of the network of historic fortifications once encircling Warsaw. Located between Old and New Towns, it is a major tourist attraction. The barbican was first erected in 1540 as part of a redesign of the 14th century city walls, that had fallen into disrepair. Advancements in artillery power, however, soon made it obsolete. In the 18th century, it was partially dismantled to incorporate a larger gate for the easier movement of people and goods in and out of the city. During the Siege of Warsaw in 1939 and the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, it was largely destroyed, as were many buildings in the Old Town. It was rebuilt 1952-54, with the help of 17th century etchings. Bricks were used from historic buildings demolished in the cities of Nysa and Wroclaw.
