In the main, however, these mines give employmentto only a few men each, and there is such a large number of them inthe county that are or have lately been active that a much longer periodthan expected had to be spent in the field in order to bring the divisionsrecords to date. The principal drift mining section is bounded on theeast by the West Branch of Feather River, on the west by Big ChicoCreek, and extends from the vicinity of Centerville and Paradise onthe south, in a direction a little east of north to the top of the mountaindivide in the northeast corner of the county, where the waters of the. West Branch are separated from those of the North Fork of FeatherRiver by summits about 6600 feet high. The streams in this sectionflow south and southwest, cutting the lava-covered slope into a seriesof long ridges beneath which are found a multitude of steep, narrowgold-bearing ancient stream channels. None of these so far exploitedcompare in size or characteristics with the large ancient rivers of thecounties farther northeast and southeast, although larger channelshave been mined farther southeast in Butte County at Bangor andCherokee.
