Bosses stealing tips, grumble, find new job, contact us, fight back_ Sign in Manchester, UK

RESTAURANT staff are in revolt over bosses stealing their tips. A series of outlets – including some of Britain’s biggest chains – have been named and shamed after taking a huge slice of the tips left for waiting and bar staff. Some have carved 10 per cent or more off tips left on credit or debit card payments, claiming it’s for administration costs. Others have been exposed for demanding waiting staff sell a fixed amount of orders or use their tips to make up the shortfall. On slow nights, some staff have even been working for nothing. Since October 2009, it has been against the law for service charges, tips, gratuities and cover charges to be used by an employer to meet the national minimum wage. But there is no legislation requiring company bosses to hand over any or all of the tip paid by card and many companies deduct an admin charge to cover the cost of bank charges and putting the money through their payroll system. The hospitality, leisure and service sectors play an important role in the UK economy , employing workers.
