PARRYS' POMONA NURSERIES. 2?. JAPAN WALNUT, SIEBOLDIANA JAPAN WALNUTS are found grow- ing wild in the mountains of northern Japan, and is, without doubt, as hardy as an oak. The leaves are of immense size, and of a charming shade of green. The nuts, which are produced in extreme abundance, grow in clusters of fifteen or twenty ; have a shell thicker than the Persian walnut, but not so thick as the black walnut. The meat is sweet; of the very best quality; flavor like butternut, but less oily, and much superior. The trees grow with great vigor, assuming a very handsome form, and need no pruning ; mature early ; bear young, and are more reg- ular and productive than the Persian walnut; having an abundance of fibrous roots it trans- plants as safely as an apple tree. The SIEBOLDIANA, JAPAN, was prob- ably the first Japan Walnut introduced in this country. The above cut gives an excellent representation of the tree, showing habit of growth and fruiting.
