Coloured atomic force micrograph (AFM) of an activated platelet (yellow), and three erythrocytes (red blood cells). Platelets are small cell fragments found in blood plasma. They activate in response to blood vessel damage, and will gather at the affected area to help form a thrombus (blood clot) and stop the bleeding.
