They are designed, like the Norfolk and Western, for an overhead trolleywith 11,000-volt single-phase current. The locomotivesthemselves are of the split-phase type with equipmentsduplicate of those on the Norfolk and Western locomo-tives, which have just been described. The mechanicalparts have been modified somewhat, chiefly in order tofit them for operating with three or four cabs or motive-power units, coupled together, since it is desired to handlevery heavy trains on the grades, which will require alocomotive with three motive-power units at the head ofthe train and three at the rear. The Pennsylvania Locomotives The Pennsylvania Railroad has under construction threelocomotives. They are designed for operation from an. 5Q:5: Fig. 4—Chilean State Railways Express Passenger Locomotive August, 1924 RAILWAY AND LOCOMuTIVK ENGINEEKING 235 overhead trolley, with 11,000-volt, 25-cycle alternatingcurrent. Like the Norfolk and Western locomotive, these are ofthe _ 8 - design, with gear and side rod drive. How-ever, they arc variable-speed locomotives, designed pri-marily for heavy- and preference-freight service on themain line of the Pennsylvania, but are to be tried out inpassenger service as well. Each jackshaft is driven bytwo single-phase commutator-type motors, each with acontinuous rating of 760 hp., which are geared so as todevelop the full rating of the locomotive of 50,000 effort at 23 These motors are furnishedby the Westinghouse Company and consist simply of thearmatures and the stator rings with the field laminationsbuilt into light castings which carry the windings andthe r
