Much of the land through which we rode to Colossiwas under crops of wheat and barley, the latter nowcoming into ear. The cultivation struck me as generallyvery poor, but what can one expect in a country wherethey merely scratch the surface of the soil, and so far asI could see never use manure ? So shallow is theirploughing that in most cases squills and other bulbousroots are not dislodged by it, but grow on among thecorn, where, dotted about, also stand many carob-trees,of which the fruit, a bean, is the basis of Thorleys and. ou o Pi w cH COLOSSI 75 other foods for cattle. On the patches of uncultivatedland a great many very beautiful anemones, the har-bingers of spring, were in flower, also large roots ofasphodel with its stiff sword-shaped leaves. This was theflower of which the Greek poets were so fond of wars and labours oer, the heroes are to repose ... in the shadowy fieldOf asphodel.* In point of fact it is in my opinion an unpleasingplant, the flowers, which spring from a tall stem, beingsmall individually and neutral-tinted. Also they havethis peculiarity; if cut and set in a room, they cause theplace to smell as though many cats had slept there. A ride of about an hour brought us to Colossi. Thatthe tower in its present shape was built or repaired in theLusignan time is evident from the coats of arms—verybeautifully cut—of the orders of the Knight
