A Canadian National Railway intermodal freight train, led by Kansas City Railway locomotives, waiting on a siding being passed by another freight train. Both Canadian National freight trains were on a single track mainline, with passing sidings, that links Chicago, northwest Indiana with Wisconsin, Minnesota and points throughout Canada, predominantly the western regions of the country. At the time the photograph was taken, Canadian National and Kansas City railways were partners in an agreement where the two railroads would merge with Canadian National being the acquiring entity. The merger, if approved, would provide direct track access via a north-south route, linking Canada, the United States and Mexico.
