GULF OF ADEN (Dec. 24, 2016) Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Fernando Diaz, from San Diego, fires an M9 pistol during a qualification shoot onboard the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8). Makin Island is deployed as part of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group to the 5th Fleet area of operations to support maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts.
