The remains of The Murphy Ranch designed as a base for Nazi activities in the during the second world war in Los Angeles. it was intended to be capable of being self-sustaining for long periods. The compound had a water storage tank, a bomb shelter, and various outbuildings and bunkers. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Sunday, December 7, 1941, local police occupied the compound and detained members of the 50-strong caretaker force. The site has since been long abandoned and is covered in graffiti and is currently owned by the city of Los Angeles. The site is popular with tourists and hikers. It is situated deep inside Rustic Canyon, in the Santa Monica Mountains.
