Closeup of an exhibit showing the method of springboard chopping used by loggers in felling trees.

This exhibit at the Darby Ranger Station on the Bitterroot National Forest shows how a board was inserted into a cut in a standing tree. The cuts, known as springboard cuts, were made in two neighboring trees. A board was then placed between them to give loggers an elevated platform on which to work.
