Costaleras carrying a trono during the Semana Santa Processions

A "Trono" (a float depicting a scene from the Easter story of Christ) is carried through the streets of Cartagena, Spain, during the traditional processions of Semana Santa (Holy Week). In the past, this was a tradition performed by the local religious brotherhoods and reserved for men only, who are known as "los costaleros" (literally, "sack men", because of the sack-like cloth they wear over their necks to soften the burden. In modern times however, women have also entered the tradition, either alongside the men or replacing them entirely - shown here as "las costaleras" in their own right.
