General Nathanael Greene is shown here retreating during the Carolina Campaign.
In the American Revolution (1775-1783), during the Carolina Campaign (1780-1781), the patriot defense was broken except for guerrilla bands. On October 7, 1780, the patriots defeated the British at King's Mountain in North Carolina. Then followed the Carolina Campaign led by General Nathanael Greene that freed both Carolinas of British control. The fighting was difficult and, at one point in February 1781, Greene retreated with the cavalry (pictured here in this 1876 engraving).
