The Development of Insects .-The growth and the moult-ing of the grasshopper from egg to adult has been stud-ied. All insects do not develop exactly by this plan. Somehatch from the Qg% in a condition markedly different fromthe adult. The butterflys 0,%% produces a wormhke cater-pillar which has no resemblance to the butterfly. Afterit grows it forms an inclosing case in which it spends aquiet period of development and comes out a change from caterpillar to butterfly is called themetamorphosis. The life of an insect is divided into four INSECTS 8i. Fig. 136. — Measuring worm, the larva of a moth. Stages : (i) egg, (2) larva, (3) pupa, and (4) imago, or per-fect insect (Figs. 136, 137, 138). The tg% stage is one of development, no nourishmentbeing absorbed. The larval stage is one of voracious feed-ing and rapid growth. In the pupastage no food is taken and there isno growth in size, but rapid devel-opment takes place. In the per-fect stage food is eaten, but nogrowth in size takes place. In thisstage the eggs are produced. When there is very little resemblance betweenthe larva and the imago, and no pupal stage, the metamorphosis, or change, is said to becomplete. When, as with the grasshopper, novery marked change takes place between thelarva and the imago, there being no pupal_ ^ stage, the metamorphosis is said to be in- FlG. 137. — Pupa V . of a mosquito.
