He said to me that Fort Smith was one of the best towns he had ever visited in the southwest and of course that made me feel pretty ; Sam Pearce has been notably success- ful during the war years, but he has earned his success by his forethought. As far back as the spring of 1918 he was thinking of the supply of bulbs for the spring of 1920. At that time it seemed doubtful if there would be any importations from Holland, so Mr. Pearce took good care of the stock from which he had been cutting and turned it over to the Michigan Bulb Farm, Ben- ton Harbor, to be planted last fall and grown on as a fifty-fifty proposition. This spring there have been three acres of Dutch bulbs in bloom at Benton Har- bor and they have made a showing cal- culated to encourage the idea that we can grow tulip and narcissus bulbs to supply all our needs. The only ques- tion seems to be one of cost. Miss Marguerite McNulty, who is right-hand man for Peter Reinberg, says the call for carnation cuttings and young mum stock has been a surprise this season. They never before have sold out the surplus at such an early date. »Frank M. Johnson and Henry Nie- buhr, of the A. L. Randall Co., spent a few days in New York last week and Saturday May 17, were in Pittsburgh. They had the opportunity to see the flowers at the funeral of H. J.
