The Oroville Water Companys ditches, carrying 3,000inches, are about forty miles long, supplying Oroville with water andirrigating the Thermalito Colony; the company also generates sufficientelectric power for lighting, and will in future supply 500 horse-powerto various industrial operations. The Palermo Land and Water Com-panys ditch, sixty miles long, carries 3,000 inches of water. The. CHEROKEK HVDRAULIC MlNE, CHEROKEE, BUTTE COUNTV. South Feather Union Ditch Companys ditch, fifty miles long, is supply-ing water for many mines and irrigating a large area. The ButteCreek Power Companys ditch is carrying 3,000 inches of water, usedfor generating electric power, supplying Oroville and Chico. Leaving Oroville, on the Forbestown road, the first mining encoun-tered is three miles out, where two quartz veins are being at the Lady Washington Mine is a ten-inch vein of hard quartzcontaining considerable free gold, and another is in the Sparke Mine,three feet wide, carrying free gold and sulphurets, between walls ofslate and diabase. On the same road, about eleven miles from Oroville, is the Hurle- MINERAL RESOURCES OF BUTTE COUNTY 283 ton district. Several quartz veins are under development here. ThePhcenix Mine is opened by shaft and tunnel. Quartz is crushed witha Bryan roller mill run by water-power. The Resumption Mine,which
