Berber man drinking mint tea from small glass underground troglodyte family home Matmata Tunisia
Some village Berbers in Matmâta or Metmata southern Tunisia live in traditional underground troglodyte pit or cave houses. Around the outside of the pit Berbers dig caves for rooms some connected by passageways or deep trenches. This troglodyte housing became better known because of the Luke Skywalker home built in this style in the Star Wars film series. These homes are exceptionally cool in searing heat. Little was known of the cave homes until extended drenching rains 1967 caused some to collapse.
