Okinawa Fishermen Ply Their Trade Despite Toll and Rigors of War. Rutted by tanks, gutted by bomb and shell, many Okinawan farms and homes have felt the heavy hand of war. Unlike the farmers, though, Okinawan fishermen still ply their trade in the waters of the picturesque island which has seen the heaviest fighting the Pacific was to date. Farming is the island's first industry, with fishing the Okinawans' secondary occupation. They use flat-bottomed, crudely-fashioned craft to obtain one of the island's staple foods, as seen above through the lens of a Coast Guard combat photographer.
