Bungay castle, Suffolk
The Bigods, the first in this country of whom came over with William The Conqueror and got large swathes of East Anglia for his trouble, built two castles in Bungay on a headland in a bend of the River Waveney. The first castle was built by a Hugh Bigod in 1165 and from there, as the worst kind of feudal lord, terrorised the region Fittingly he died on a crusade in Syria. The second castle, the remains of whcih are seen here, was built by a Roger Bigod in 1294.
