Evolution of dog breeds, illustration. The modern breeds of the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris) evolved from the wolf (Canis lupus). It is thought that the domestication of wolves as hunting dogs occurred by around 15,000 years ago. Most breeds are only a few hundred years old. This diagram shows 77 of the hundreds of breeds, with 11 colour-coded groupings (key at top right): greyhounds, shepherd dogs, retrievers, terriers, mastiffs, work dogs, hounds, spaniels, toy dogs, older breeds and spitzes. At centre is a wolf, with the breeds progressing clockwise from upper centre, starting with those closest to wolves genetically. The eight other breeds shown pictorially are (clockwise from top): Malamute, German Shorthaired Pointer, Beagle, German Shepherd, Boxer, Mastiff, Rottweiler, and Greyhound.
