Surgery to remove a brain tumour being performed with the assistance of 3-D reconstructions of conventional computed tomograph (CT) scans. The 3- D image at left shows the position of the tumour & its position relative to other important structures in the brain & helps the surgeon decide on the best method of access. Conventional CT images are constructed from data relating to the attenuation of a series of X-ray beams by body tissues. 3-D reconstructions are a more recent development, constructed by powerful computer programs which use the 2-D CT scan data as input. Such images are useful to surgeons in planning for reconstructive or cosmetic surgery.
