. England, from earliest times to the Great Charter . King of Englandwould overwhelm the King of France. Richard had shownboth tenacity of purpose and breadth of view. When theArchbishop of Rouen laid Normandy tmder an interdictbecause the King persisted in the building of Chateau Gaillardon Church lands, Richard had rephed by continuing the workand sending an embassy to Rome. Death of Richard Despite the heavy expenses of the Crusade and hisransoming, the King demanded yet more money to completehis plans against Philip. He was awaiting the arrival of amilitary levy from England in order to make a final attackupon Philip, when he was fatally wounded by a poisonedarrow shot in a small affray while attacking the castle ofChalus in his own Duchy of Aquitaine, in order to compelthe surrender of some buried treasure. The castle was takenby the King, who was unaware of the serious nature of thewound. Twelve days later Richard was dead. The death of Richard marks the end of Englands holdon Normandy. While he lived he had increased his power552. THE AGE OF CHIVALRY abroad rather than the converse; he had also created acombination against PhiHp which might have proved over-whelming had he lived to lead his allies in person against theman he hated. Hence onward there is a change in the tide. A vile and vicious King succeeded. France gained almostat a blow most of the English Kings Continental possessions, and although John, by the exercise of that ability which washis one good quality, came near to recovering all that hadbeen lost, his schemes were thwarted by his own misrule, and France remained mistress of nearly all the disputedterritory. Had Richard lived it may be that from ChateauGaillard and Boutavant armies would have moved to thecapture of Paris itseh, and the whole history of Europe mighthave been changed. The dead King has left a high andglorious reputation as warrior and knight. He might, hadhe lived, have been famed as a conqueror; but he was dead, and with him died
