Plant in good soil, and manure from time to time freely. The hills should be not less than four feet apart each way, with two or three plants in a hill. Cut out the old and weak shoots each year, preserving not over six for fruiting. Surplus suckers take strength from the bearing plants. They should be cut away or hoed up frequently. CLASS I.—RED AND YELLOW VARIETIES. 'Brandywine (Susqueco)—Large; bright red; very firm. Valuable for market on ac- count of its fine shipping qualities.
