Cancer surgery scar. Abdominal scars 2 weeks after surgery carried out to remove a hepatoma (liver cancer) from a 68-year-old man. A hepatoma is the most common type of liver cancer. It originates in mature liver cells, and it will often develop from cirrhosis or hepatitis infections. Damage to liver function limits treatment options, and death by liver failure often results. Surgical removal of the cancerous area is only suitable in less than 20% of patients and less than 50% of those will survive more than 5 years. This prognosis is still better than those for transplantation or the use of anticancer drugs, or an advanced case, when the survival time can be as little as three months.
