I left Monga at about was no proper road, merely a narrow, almostinvisible track winding in and out through the swampsof the dense, primeval forest. I had injured my foot,so whenever it was possible, I rode the horse that hadkindly been lent to me in Yakoma ; many times I wasobliged to lie flat on his back, Indian-fashion, andfinally a low branch lifted me right out of thesaddle.
