Light micrograph of large bowel smooth muscle. The wall of the large bowel contains thick smooth muscle fibres (pink horizontal lines) termed the muscularis propria. The nuclei of the smooth muscle cells (dark blue) are spindled in shape. Interspersed amongst the muscle fibres are a few small blood vessels (bright red). Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section. Magnification: 100x when printed at 10 centimetres.
