Steelyard Rod with Weight and Hooks, 5th–7th century, Byzantine, Copper alloy, Overall: 20 5/8 x 17 7/8 x 2 3/4 in. ( x x 7 cm), Metalwork-Copper alloy, Steelyards, a Roman invention, were used to weigh goods by sliding weights along the rod to balance the load suspended from hooks on the chains. This rod is inscribed with scales for two sets of measures and the names of the owners
