Iviii.), andthe sacred Vedas were recovered fromthe bottom of the ocean. Entering the forework erected bythe Emperor Aurangzeb in front ofthe Lahore Gate, and passing underits grand archway, it will be foundthat the route beyond leads under avaulted arcade (see plan of Fort and 1 Lieutenants Raynor and Forrest, Con-ductors Shaw, Scully, and Buckley, Sub-Conductor Crow, Sergeants Edwards ROUTE 14. PALACE 197 Palace), which Mr Fergusson con-siders to be the noblest entranceknown to belong to any the octagon in the centre of ita gateway to the left conducts to thesteps leading up to the rooms (nowprivate quarters) over the LahoreGate. At the foot of these, on thenth May 1857, was killed the Com-missioner of the Division, and in the rooms above were murdered thewounded Collector and Commandant,the Chaplain and two ladies. Thevaulted arcade ends in the centreof the outer court, which measured540 ft. by 360 ft., of which the sidearcades and central tank have beenremoved; round the edge of thelatter were murdered, on i6th June1857, some fifty Christians who hadescaped the massacre of the the E. wall of the court was thenow isolated Naubat or NakkarKhana, the band gallery of which is100 ft. by 80 ft. ; and here every oneexcept princes of the royal blood wasrequired to dismount.
