Sir John Kendrew (), British biochemist and Nobel Laureate. Kendrew graduated in Natural Science at Cambridge in 1939, and spent World War Two in the Ministry of Aircraft Production. In 1946 he joined Perutz at Cambridge and started to study the crystalline structure of the muscle protein myoglobin using X-ray diffraction techniques. In 1953, Perutz discovered the method of adding heavy metal atoms to proteins to improve the resolution of the technique. Kendrew adapted the method to myoglobin, and by 1959 had produced a structure for the protein. Kendrew and Perutz shared the 1962 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their work.
