Colour-coded image of the brain of an adult human, produced using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The white areas of the scan indicate the extensive presence of myelin, a complex material formed of protein and phospholipid that is laid down as a sheath around the axons of certain nerve cells in the brain, forming an insulating layer around the fibre. Myelinated nerves conduct impulses more rapidly than non-myelinated fibres. In addition, the irregularly edged areas of the cerebral cortex, and the ventricles (the fluid- filled cavities in the centre of the brain) are apparent. 7th in a series of 7.
