The Gates Crusher is similar in principle and construction to the Comet. Prof. H. states, in a paper on Gold Millingin the Black Hills (Trans. Am. Inst. Min-ing Engrs., vol. xviii.) that one of thesecrushers, lately installed at the Caledoniamill, at Terraville, S. D., with three receivingopenings, each 12 x 18 in., attended by oneman, crushed 200 tons of ore in 10 hours,•with about the same horse-power as threeNo. 5 Blakes, and set to the same size asthe latter. When the three Blakes were inuse, it required 20 hours and 5 men to pro-duce the same result. The disadvantage ofboth the Gates and Comet crushers is theirenormous weight, and the consequent diffi-culty of transporting them, especially inmany mining regions in rough and moun-tainous parts of the country. Fine-crushing Machines. — T%e BlakeIlultiple-jaw Crusher (Fig. 7) is constructedupon the same principle as the ordinaryBlake crusher, but is designed for finer crushing. The Comet crusher.
