White Pass (el. 873 m.) is a mountain pass through the Coast Mountains on the border of the state of Alaska and British Columbia, Canada. It leads from Skagway, Alaska to the chain of lakes that are the headwaters of the Yukon River, Crater Lake, Lake Lindeman and Bennett Lake. Yukon is the westernmost and smallest of Canada's three territories. It was named after the Yukon River, Yukon meaning "Great River" in Gwich’in. Created in 1898 as the Yukon Territory, the federal government's most recent update of the Yukon Act in 2003 confirmed "Yukon", rather than "Yukon Territory", as the current usage standard. At 5,959 metres (19,551 ft), Yukon's Mount Logan, in Kluane National Park and Reserve, is the highest mountain in Canada and the second highest of North America (after Mount McKinley in the state of Alaska). The Klondike Gold Rush, sometimes referred to as the Yukon Gold Rush or Alaska Gold Rush, was a frenzy of gold rush immigration to and for gold prospecting, along the Klondike River near Dawson City, Yukon, Canada after gold was discovered there in the late 19th century. In total, about million ounces of gold (about ) have been taken from the Klondike area in the century since its discovery.
