In the foreground are posters advertising shows at the Palace Theatre Centre and Cliffs Pavillion with stars such as Adam Faith, Norman Wisdom and Howard Keel. In the distance is the Victorian pier (completed 1889, miles long) which has survived several serious fires including one in 1959. This photo was taken after the pier had re-opened in 1990 and before it was closed again by fire in June 1995, and again in October 2005 when the amusement arcade and adjacent buildings were destroyed by suspected arson.
