Beach bathing machines with bathers. These huts on wheels were developed in the Victorian era to allow bathers to change and be wheeled down to the sea for private and secluded bathing. Men and women initially bathed separately, but later mixed bathing became acceptable. This photograph, taken in Ostend, Belgium, dating from 19 June 1913, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
