It is a town of about 7000 population best known as the site of Southwell Minster, the seat of the Church of England diocese that covers Nottinghamshire. There are many historic buildings in the town as well as the Minster (the cathedral and parish church of St Mary of Southwell) including Burgage Manor which was Lord Byron's house, The Saracen's Head built in 1463, ten of the original 16 prebend houses, and The Workhouse Museum, a former parish workhouse.
