View of Lucknow


Lucknow is the capital of the Uttar Pradesh province in India. It is a centre of culture and recognised in India for its inhabitants love of poetry, music, fine food, etiquette and manners. Its history is dominated by the influence of the Nawabs who ruled it in Mughal times. Some of the principal personalities were Nawab Saadat Khan and Nawab Asaf-ud-Dowlah who were instrumental in constructing the more imposing buildings and monuments such as the Bara Imambara, the Chota Imambara and the Roomi Darwaza. From the 19th century the British began to take control of the region and the city. The city became the centre of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 (aka Indian Mutiny, First War of independence) during which much damage was sustained by the beautiful monuments of the city. The view shows some of the architecture which dominated the approach to the city in the 19th century.
