ALBERT A. PARENT French Secretary, Chief Surgeon, 26th Division, U. S. A. HIGHER EDUCATION Is American Higher Education Improving?is the title of an article in The Educational Re-view. The writer thereof thinks it is not. Onecan approve of this conclusion when he thinkshow materialism is tincturing our education andmaking knowledge instead of purpose and ten-dency the end to be sought. No education can • said to succeed that leaves out of first consid-eration the soul of the student, that part of himwhich constitutes his personality, which is thechief object of public education to develop. Itis not SO much sought in true education to makea pupil learned or smart, or knowing, as to makehim noble, sincere, brave, faithful, courteous andhonest. These things constitute the citizenshipfor the achievement of which the commonschools are established and for which the peopleare called upon to pay taxes. Higher educationis worth only the manhood that is put into it.—Ohio State Journal. mitt
