Maen Cattwg cup-marked stone NW of Gelligaer, Caerphilly, Wales, UK, decorated with up to 50 cups, two of them joined by narrow grooves. A flat, roughly rectangular weathered sandstone boulder lying flat in a pasture field SW of Heol Adam Roman road which leads N from Gelligaer to Y Gaer fort W of Brecon. The cupmarks are most probably prehistoric (Neolithic-Bronze Age) but the stone is named for the Early Christian St Cattwg (Catwg, Cadoc, Cadog) who spent time (and may have died) in the area in the C5th-6thAD. Gelligaer village church is dedicated to St Catwg who was the son of St Gwladys & St Gwynlliw. It is just possible that the stone once served as the megalithic capstone to a Neolithic burial chamber.
