View SSW of a sarsen stone at Totterdown on Overton Down, near Avebury, England, UK, used in the Neolithic for shaping, smoothing & sharpening stone axes: a sandstone work-bench used to finish harder metamorphic rocks brought from northern & western Britain. Excavations by Peter Fowler in 1963 located a socket hole in which the stone may once have stood upright. A metal wedge & a halfpenny of King John (1199-1216) were also found giving a possible C13th date for when the stone was split in half & the whole W side removed: the marks of metal wedges & quarry chisels remain on the W (R) split edge. The stone is at SU 128715, 150m E of the Ridgeway & NW of Delling Copse.
